    Mrs Kelly is the Design and technology subject leader at our School.

Intent

At Shilbottle Primary, Design Technology is taught in all year groups using blocked subject time. Our Design Technology projects are often made cross curricular - linking to other subjects taught. Our Design Technology curriculum at Shilbottle intends that children; create products that are made for a purpose, have individuality in their design and construction of products, are taught both designing and making and cooking and nutrition, understand the importance of making on-going changes and improvements during the making stages, and link their Design Technology work to other areas of the curriculum including science and historical events. At Shilbottle Primary we aim to create a Design Technology curriculum that allows all pupils to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world, build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality products for a wide range of uses, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others in order to review and improve for future designs.

Implement:

The teaching of Design Technology across our school ensures that children design products with a purpose in mind and an intended user of the products. Food technology is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare this.

Design and technology is treated as important as other subjects and we strive to deliver of a high quality Design and Technology curriculum; through well planned and resourced projects and experiences. Design and Technology is very cross - curricular and draws upon subject knowledge and skills within Mathematics, Science, History, Computing and Art. Children learn to take risks, be reflective, innovative, enterprising and resilient. Through the evaluation of past and present technology they can reflect upon the impact of Design Technology on everyday life and the wider world. Lessons are planned to cover all objectives of the national curriculum at each key stage. We emphasise the design, make, and evaluate process when children are completing their various projects and technical knowledge is just as important. Children are taught knowledge in each area of Design Technology and encouraged to remember this throughout their learning, being able to apply this to each new project and practical task them undertake.

Impact
The impact of the Design Technology curriculum at Shilbottle Primary is assessed through; the ongoing monitoring of children's understanding, knowledge and skills by the class teacher, throughout lessons, verbal feedback to each child regarding their work and projects, teacher assessment of the meeting of national curriculum objectives for their stage, and the recording of this on classroom monitor. Design Technology is also monitored by the subject leader throughout the year in the form of book monitoring, pupil voice and staff discussions.
